Chapter Nine

Shock radiated through Slater as Noah led him from the Atlantis room. He quickened his pace to keep up with his friend as they exited the doors. Curling his fingers more securely around his surprise bidder's hand, he marveled at the feeling of the strong grip holding him tight.

Noah didn't stop or slow down until they reached the elevator. He pressed the button and his gaze roamed Slater's body. "You're wearing my shirt."

Slater's brows drew together and his eyes narrowed as confusion clouded over every other emotion. He had zero patience for games. He needed to know what Noah wanted. Why he'd placed that bid. "You paid twenty-five grand to get your shirt back?"

"No. But I'd have paid any amount to get you back."

The vulnerability and earnestness and sadness washing over Noah's features pulled at something deep in Slater's core.

"Get me back? I don't understand."

Noah's lips pressed together as he slowly shook his head. His blue eyes blazed with an intensity suggesting there were a lot of thoughts churning through that brilliant mind, and Noah was getting them in order. When his gaze shifted to their joined hands, a soft smile bloomed and he rubbed his thumb over Slater's knuckles.

That touch alone was enough to bring him to his knees. "Noah…"

"We've never held hands before." His hushed tone held so much wonder.

"No. We haven't."

The elevator pinged and the doors to their right opened. Noah's hand flexed once and held on as they stepped inside the empty car. Slater hit the button for his floor. It dawned on him that he didn't know where Noah's room was located. They'd checked in separately and weren't exactly on friendly terms the other day.

The car stopped at the seventh floor. "This is me."

A tentative teasing smile curved Noah's lips. "I assumed so. I saw you hit the button."

"Oh, right." Chuckling, he shrugged. "Didn't think."

As they walked down the hall, he dug his room card from his jeans pocket. He had to release Noah's hand so he could open the door. After flicking on the light, he waved Noah inside, then followed and set the card and his phone on the desk.

Hands shoved into his jeans pockets, Noah stood in the middle of the room. His gaze bounced like a loose puck from the chair to the window to the bed to Slater. "So…"

Time for answers. He leaned his hip against the desk and crossed his arms over his chest. "You said we needed to talk."

"We do. Or, I do. I have things to say."

"Why did you bid on me?"

Noah's tongue swept over his lips. That searching, searing, soul-stirring gaze from the elevator returned and tugged on Slater's heartstrings. "I couldn't stand the idea of you falling in love with someone else."

Slater gaped at him as the words sunk in and imprinted in his mind. He pushed away from the desk and took a step closer to Noah. "But you said—"

"I know. Best friends, roommates, and teammates." He dragged his hands through his hair.
